Abandoned

My cousin Ashley and I decided to go on a little mischievous adventure this past weekend. There is an old sanitarium (or sanatorium depending on your preference) that is now abandoned and boarded up. The grounds are open to the public and they are actually very nice. It is right on the water and you can bring your dogs there to walk. There is a little covered bridge and some benches and trees. What I find so odd is that in the middle of all of this are two old boarded up buildings looming with their eerie presence.

There were remnants of an old playground on the grounds. There was an old slide and the skeleton of a gazebo type structure. Everything was so overgrown. There were pricker bushes and thorns everywhere. It was hard to get around some parts. Having our coats on definitely helped to avoid any scratches or anything.

It's so weird that no one has knocked them down or tried to fix them up and turn them into something else. Of course, there are rumors that this place is super haunted. Kids with tuberculosis used to stay here, and a lot of them probably died here. Lots of people have gotten inside the place and walked around and of course, we wanted to too. So when we spotted an open window, we took our chances and went in.

The place is creepy. REALLY creepy. There is graffiti everywhere that people clearly wrote to scare others. It was really warm out this day, but it was so cold in the building that we could see our breath. Everything was falling apart and the ceiling had caved in in some places. There was wet plaster all over the floors. There were old medical documents and creepy cages and rooms. There was broken glass, old equipment, and old paintings. It felt like a horror movie or one of those ghost hunting shows and even though it was the middle of the afternoon, it felt so dark and scary in there.

We eventually ran into a group of teenagers that were also exploring. It felt like the beginning of a horror movie...haha. They showed us around the top floor and told us about other times they came here. They were cool and one of the girls was also taking photos with her DSLR. They offered to go into the basement with us, but Ashley was super creeped out, and I was kinda nervous about it. It just seemed so dark down there. After you look around, everything pretty much looks the same - dilapidated, decayed, and destroyed. It would be so scary to be in this place at night. I don't know if I could do it. I've always wanted to see a ghost and do a little bit of ghost hunting, but I know I would be terrified, especially in an enclosed place like this. I'd rather go to a haunted cemetery or something.

After we were done exploring the building, we went back down to where we came in with our fellow teenage explorers. We were all standing near the window when suddenly, we heard a big thud come from above us. We all knew it was time to go and headed back out the window and onto the grounds. I'm sure it was either another person or something falling, but you can't help but wonder if it was something supernatural... My camera kept being unable to take pictures, which happens rarely. Sometimes it tries to focus and just can't and then I hold the shutter button down and it just won't take a picture. It happened a lot in this building. I've heard stories about how ghosts can mess with electronics, but I'm sure it was just a coincidence. I had to have the ISO all the way up to 6400 at times, so it was probably just having issues.

My outfit is pretty autumny even though we are now into March and near springtime. But I just recently got this scarf for less than $10 at Target and I love it so much. I love the colors and the print and how big it is. It's everything I want in a scarf! I felt like I had to pair it with something very prairie/70s-esque, so I went with this orange dress with the billowy sheer sleeves. I also broke out my grey hat again. It seemed appropriate for a day of exploring, plus it fit with the feel of the outfit. I also love this shade of Too Faced lipstick and it tends to go really well with more autumny hues.

Well...the next time I post, I will be posting from the glorious and lovely warmth of Florida! I will be spending the whole week there. My parents and I have our week pretty much planned out, and I can't wait to share my excursions with you all! I have outfits to match some of the places we are going, too. I always love when I get to do that. I love themed things! I can't wait to escape this cold and get away from the piles and piles of snow that are everywhere. I keep checking the weather for the week, and it is supposed to be in the 70s and 80s. Hooray!! It's supposed to be rainy a couple of days and cloudy others, but I don't mind. Just as long as it's warm and I get to see palm trees instead of this awful snow.

  1. Your outfit is gorgeous, you look lovely. What a brilliant and eerie place to explore! I would have loved to have tagged along. I can see why there are rumours about in your area that it is haunted. The graffiti makes it all the more spookier. It really does sound like you were in a movie, especially when you both bumped into that other group of young people. What fun. You took some really great pictures too!
    Have fun in Florida!

  4. Wow that is so neat! There used to be an old psychiatric hospital like this near my house (which had been used as a hospital during the war), but it was torn down and a subdivision put up.

Your outfit is really cute. I love the hat/scarf combination :)
